Ezri Dax |
In late
2374, unforeseen circumstances lead Ezri Tigan, a young and promising Starfleet
ensign, to unexpectedly become the new host for the Dax symbiont. As the
ninth Dax host, Ezri has a rich legacy to live up to. Her immediate predecessor,
Jadzia, is a valued and popular officer during her service on the Federation
station Deep Space Nine, but, in 2374, Jadzia is murdered by the insane Gul
Dukat. Dr. Julian Bashir manages to save the Dax symbiont, and it is rushed
aboard the U.S.S. Destiny, for transportation back to Trill. Halfway through
the journey, the symbiont takes a turn for the worse; it needs to be placed
in a host immediately. Ensign Ezri Tigan, serving as an assistant ship's
counselor, is the only Trill on board the Destiny; despite her total lack
of preparation, she agrees to become the symbiont's new host. Instead of
the usual years of training to prepare her to joined existence, Ezri is given
a 15 minute lecture by the ship's surgeon - "and he wasn't even a Trill!"
She later remarks. "I laid down on that operating table one person [and woke
up] eight different people." In light of this, Ezri's subsequent confusion
over her identity is understandable. Unlike many young Trills, Ezri never
wanted to be joined; instead, she spent most of her childhood dreaming of
a life and career that would take her far away from her home and family.
Ezri's dreams of leaving home become reality when she joins Starfleet, a
decision that leads her to a new life, first on the starship U.S.S. Destiny,
and later on Deep Space Nine. The young Trill's defiance of her mother's
wishes shows that Yanas has not smothered her daughter's independent spirit,
but the same cannot be said for Ezri's two brothers, both of whom work for
the family firm. Ezri's new life may, at times, be strange and uncomfortable,
but she does not regret her decision to leave home. She has forged a new
life for herself in Starfleet, one that allows her to follow her own dreams
and aspirations, free of unreasonable expectations. (from Fact Files).
