The first Starfleet vessel named Enterprise, this ship was commissioned in
2245. Commanded in turn by Capt. Robert April, Capt.
Christopher Pike and Capt.
James T. Kirk, this ship is one of the most
legendary starships in Federation history. So significant were the exploits
of this ship and her crew that in 2277 the practice of having a separate
insignia for each starship was abolished, and the Enterprise insignia became
the official symbol for the entire Starfleet. Also, each new starship Enterprise
carries the same registry number as the original, followed by a one letter
suffix to differentiate from its predecessors. The original U.S.S. ENTERPRISE
was destroyed in 2285 by James T. Kirk to prevent
her from being captured by Klingons in the Mutara sector.
The missions of this ship while under the command of Captain James Tiberius Kirk were the subject of the original Star Trek television series as well as the first three Star Trek movies.
