Spacecraft used to test Federation resolve during the Romulan incursion of 2266. The Bird-of-Prey is a symbol of the Romulan Star Empire's strength and prosperity. This ship, painted with an impressive predator bird, was equipped with a cloaking device and a powerful plasma energy weapon. Propulsion was simple impulse. This may have been the first known example of a ship equipped with a practical invisibility screen. Fortunately, it was learned that the cloaking device required so much power that the ship had to decloak in order to fire.

After 87 years of service, the Bird-of-Prey continues to be the most versatile warship in the fleet, serving as a gunship, science vessel, transport, and reconnaissance ship in all branches of the Romulan military. After the installation of 2 disruptor emitters, warp drive, simultaneous-launching plasma cannon, and many other retrofits, the Bird-of-Prey is an easy match for the Federation's Excelsior-class starship.
