Originally built as a detterent to the Borg, the USS Defiant was brought to Deep Space 9 by then Commander Sisko to fight the Dominion and its Jem'Hadar troops. It was built under Sisko's watchfull eye at the Utopia Planitia plants, the same shipyard which produced the Enterprise-D. Officially classified as an escort, the Defiant is actually a battlecruiser. Its small size hides its true power. It is armed with standard phasers as well as a new type of phaser, which fires in pulses, and quantum torpedoes. The USS Defiant is also the first Federation starship to 'officially' use a cloaking device (the Pegasus was eqquiped with an illegal Federation cloaking and phasing device. It was briefly installed aboard the Enterprise-D TNG "Pegasus". Also the origianl Enterprise, while under the command of the legendary Captain James T. Kirk, stole a Romulan cloaking device from three Romulan ships which had surrounded the Enterprise in Romulan space TOS "The Enterprise Incident".) After its first year stationed at DS9, the Defiant was covered in ablative armor to better protect it from Jem'Hadar weapon systems which seem to penetrate Federation shileds rather easily. The Defiant is, at least, the second ship to bear that name. The first USS Defiant was one of the original Constitution class starships. It was lost to a parallel universe in the episode of the original Star Trek series, entitled The Web of the Tholians, which was also the first time the Tholians were encountered.
The USS Defiant assigned to Space Station Deep Space 9, under the command of Captain Sisko, is frequently shown on the current television series Star Trek: Deep Space 9. It has been on DS9 since the beginning of the third season, first seen in the season opener entitled The Search. According to some rumors, the USS Defiant will be destroyed or critically damaged in the upcoming movie, Star Trek: First Contact, while defending Earth from a Borg attack.Her crew will be saved by the USS Enterprise-E
