Marina Sirtis is Counselor Deanna Troi, a half-human/half-alien (Betazoid)
empath with the ability to read emotions and sense what is happening around
her. "Deanna is also a very wise person with extensive knowledge of philosophy,
psychology and different religions, and is called on to advise Captain Picard
(Patrick Stewart) in a variety of situations," says Marina.
During the show's fifth season hiatus, Marina ventured into her own new frontier:
marriage. Marina wed musician Michael Lamper in a traditional Greek ceremony
and the couple resides in Los Angeles.
Born in East London to Greek parents, and brought up in North London, Marina
attended the Guild Hall School of Music and Drama. Shortly after graduation,
she became a member of the Worthing Repertory Theatre, where she portrayed
Ophelia in "Hamlet," among other classical roles.
Marina has worked extensively in British television, in musical theatre and
in repertory companies throughout England and Europe. In addition to appearing
in the feature film "The Wicked Lady" with Faye Dunaway, Marina revealed
her considerable vocal talents in a European tour of the immensely popular
"Rocky Horror Show." During the third season hiatus, Marina returned to England,
where she filmed the feature "One Last Chance" for the BBC, which was shot
on location in London and Windsor. As well, Marina played a cameo role in
the film "Waxwork II: Adventures in Time." In November of 1996, Marina Sirtis
will be reprising her role as Deanna Troi in the new motion picture "Star
Trek 8: First Contact".
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" viewers do not hear Marina's English accent,
but rather a combination of several different accents that she devised. "In
the 24th century, geographical or nationalistic barriers are not so evident.
The Earth as a planet is your country, your nationality. I didn't want anyone
to be able to pin down my accent to any particular country, and being good
at accents, the producers trusted me to come up with something appropriate,"
she explains.
Sirtis: on her favorite episode...
My favorite episode is Face of the Enemy because it was not a "girlie" episode.
Any one of the crew could have been transformed into a Romulan. Troi was
chosen because she was an empath, not because she was female. The fans seem
to agree. It was the highest-rated episode last season.

Marina Sirtis: Counselor Deanna Troi
A raven haired beauty who is equal parts Greek passion and English reserve, Marina Sirtis has won over even the most die-hard of Trekkers during the seven seasons on the highly rated syndicated series Star Trek: The Next Generation. As Counselor Deanna Troi, Sirtis has carved out a complex and understated performance as a half human/half Betazoid character who has an extraordinary ability to read the emotions of others.
Born in London, Sirtis and her younger brother were raised by their strict Greek parents; a father who was a tailor and a mother who was a dressmaker. Though she admits to having been "on the plain side" during her formative years, Sirtis developed a quick wit and a winning personality which made her "the leader of the pack" with friends.
At age 16 she put her need to perform to good use when she was cast in a student production, though her desire to become an actress proved difficult for her old-world parents to accept. Despite her parents objections, Sirtis went on to three years of intensive study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and immersed herself in the London Theatre scene.
In November 1986, Sirtis felt compelled to move to the United States to further her career. Within three days of arriving in Los Angeles, she had her first job a week later. Within six months, she went through over six weeks to land her role on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
Marina reveals that when she first auditioned, it was for the role of Tasha Yar, the Enterprise's Security Chief.
"After my third audition for Tasha, I was literally waking out the door when they called me back to read for Deanna. While I was looking at the script, director Cory Allen came in and said, 'you have something personally that the character should have...an empathy, so use it.' I love being able to play someone who is so deep with that kind of insight into people particularly since I get cast as the hard 1980's type."
A multi-faceted and enigmatic woman, she takes equal delight in listening to Les Miserablesand Bon Jovi. She currently resides in Hollywood with her husband , musician Michael Lamper.
